000 AGXX40 KNHC 020611 MIMATS Marine Weather Discussion NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL 211 AM EDT Wed Aug 2 2017 Marine Weather Discussion for the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, and Tropical North Atlantic from 07N to 19N between 55W and 64W and the Southwest North Atlantic including the Bahamas ...GULF OF MEXICO... A surface trough extends westward from 28N88W, through a 1011 mb low near 27N87W to 27N94W, supporting moderate to fresh easterly winds over the northeast Gulf along with scattered showers and thunderstorms. A ridge axis extends across the southeastern Gulf to the south-central Gulf supporting mainly gentle to moderate winds elsewhere over the basin. The ridge axis will drift northward through today, while forcing the trough northward toward the northern Gulf coast. The ridge will then extend from central Florida to the southeast Texas coast through the remainder of the week. This pattern will support mainly gentle to moderate winds across the basin, and seas of 2 to 4 ft. The only exception will be a trough that will develop over the Yucatan Peninsula each evening, move W during the overnight hours dissipating over the SW Gulf each morning. Winds associated with this trough may increase to 20 kt during the overnight hours with seas briefly reaching 5 to 6 ft. ...CARIBBEAN SEA AND TROPICAL N ATLANTIC FROM 07N TO 19N BETWEEN 55W AND 64W... A tropical wave along 81W will move across the remainder of the western Caribbean through tonight. Another tropical wave in central Atlantic along 55W will reach the Lesser Antilles Wed, then move across the Caribbean Wed night through early Sat. Fresh trade winds and building seas associated with the wave are spreading across the tropical Atlantic between 13N and 20N as well as across the north-central and northeast Caribbean this morning. Seas are building to 8 to 9 ft in the tropical Atlantic waters, with 8 ft seas in Atlantic passages. Strong winds will then push into the Windward Passage by Wed night behind the wave axis. Persistent high pressure north of the region will support fresh to occasionally strong trade winds over most of the central Caribbean the next several days. Winds will also pulse to near 25 kt in the Gulf of Honduras Thu through Sat as the ridge builds westward across the Gulf of Mexico. ...SW N ATLANTIC INCLUDING THE BAHAMAS... Post-Tropical Cyclone Emily is now moving north of our discussion waters along 77W this morning. The cyclone is supporting fresh to strong southwest winds within about 120 nm to the southeast of the center, with seas to 9 ft. These winds and seas will improve over our waters through today, as the cyclone moves well north of our area. A tropical wave moving through the Lesser Antilles into the central Caribbean Wed through Fri will freshen trade winds in southern waters south of 24N the next few days. Fresh to strong winds will pulse off Hispaniola and approaches to the Windward Passage through Fri, with strongest winds occurring during the afternoon and evening with seas reaching 8 ft. Winds and seas will diminish this weekend as weak high pressure builds over the region. Elsewhere, a ridge axis will extend from the central Atlantic to central Florida starting tonight, persisting through the remainder of the week.
