000 AGXX40 KNHC 010641 MIMATS Marine Weather Discussion NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL 241 AM EDT Tue Aug 1 2017 Marine Weather Discussion for the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, and Tropical North Atlantic from 07N to 19N between 55W and 64W and the Southwest North Atlantic including the Bahamas ...GULF OF MEXICO... A surface trough extends east to west over the central Gulf from 26N84W to 26N92W, supporting showers and thunderstorms mainly over the southeastern Gulf. This trough will drift northward toward the northern Gulf coast through Wednesday, as high pressure ridging builds across the southern Gulf from the Atlantic. Showers and thunderstorms will continue in the vicinity of this trough through this time period. Moderate to fresh easterly winds north of the trough and gentle to moderate winds elsewhere can be expected today. By tonight, the ridge axis will shift northward to the central Gulf, with moderate east to southeast winds developing across the southern Gulf. A trough will develop over the Yucatan Peninsula each evening, move W during the overnight hours dissipating over the SW Gulf each morning. Winds associated with this trough may increase to 20 kt during the overnight hours. Late this week, the high will strengthen, with a high center becoming established over the eastern Gulf. This will support moderate to fresh southeast to south winds over the western Gulf Thursday night through Saturday. ...CARIBBEAN SEA AND TROPICAL N ATLANTIC FROM 07N TO 19N BETWEEN 55W AND 64W... A tropical wave over the central Caribbean will reach the western Caribbean late tonight, and cross central America Wednesday night. This wave will support clusters of thunderstorms, especially over the terrain of the Greater Antilles and Colombia through today. The ridge of high pressure north of the Caribbean will support mainly moderate to fresh trades over the Caribbean through today. The ridge is forecast to intensify tonight and expand westward which will help to increase trades over the eastern Caribbean tonight, then the north central Caribbean Wednesday and Thursday. Winds will also begin to pulse to strong over the Gulf of Honduras starting Thursday due to the ridging to the north. A tropical wave approaching the tropical Atlantic waters will further enhance the trades as it crosses the eastern and central Caribbean Thursday and Friday. Seas will build to 8 to 9 ft over the tropical Atlantic waters today, with 8 ft seas through the Atlantic passages. Once winds increase to fresh to strong over the eastern and central Caribbean late this week, seas will also increase to 8 to 9 ft. Once this second wave crosses into the western Caribbean on Saturday, the ridging to the north will be sufficient to support fresh to strong easterly winds across much of the central Caribbean through the upcoming weekend. ...SW N ATLANTIC INCLUDING THE BAHAMAS... The small core of Tropical Depression Emily is about to emerge off of the Florida coast near Martin County. The depression will move northeast the next couple of days while generally maintaining its intensity, generating max seas to 8 to 10 ft, before moving north of our waters on Thursday. The combination of the depression, and an upper trough over the northern waters will support numerous showers and some embedded thunderstorms through Wednesday. A ridge axis extending from high pressure over the central Atlantic to the central Bahamas and Florida Straits will strengthen and shift northward to central Florida by Thursday, with a high center becoming established over our northeastern zones by Friday night. To the south of the ridge axis, fresh to locally strong easterly winds can be expected the next several days. The strongest winds will occur along the north coast of Hispaniola during the afternoon and evenings with seas reaching 8 ft. A tropical wave crossing the southeast zones Wednesday night through Friday will help to enhance winds and seas slightly further, with 8 to 9 ft seas spreading across zones AMZ127 today through Thursday, and AMZ125 tonight through Friday. Winds will diminish somewhat over the southern waters going into the weekend as the center of the high becomes established to the north. Tranquil conditions can be expected over the northern waters under this high pressure this weekend, with seas of 3 to 5 ft. $$ .WARNINGS...Any changes impacting coastal NWS offices will be coordinated through AWIPS II Collaboration Chat, or by telephone: .GULF OF MEXICO...
