000 AGXX40 KNHC 110741 MIMATS Marine Weather Discussion NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL 341 AM EDT Tue Jul 11 2017 Marine Weather Discussion for the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, and Tropical North Atlantic from 07N to 19N between 55W and 64W and the Southwest North Atlantic including the Bahamas ...GULF OF MEXICO... A high pressure ridge extends over the northern Gulf waters from Tampa to the upper Texas coast. Latest satellite derived winds and sea heights along with ship, buoy, and CMAN data depict light and variable winds over the northern Gulf and gentle to moderate winds over the southern Gulf. Seas are in the 2-4 ft range over the southwest Gulf and 1-2 ft elsewhere. The high pressure ridge will remain in place along the northern Gulf Coast through the end of the week. A thermal trough will develop each evening over the Yucatan Peninsula before pushing offshore into the SW Gulf at night, then dissipate during the morning. A surge of moderate to fresh N-NE winds will accompany the trough. Seas will briefly peak around 5 ft by early morning in association with these winds. Otherwise, gentle to moderate E to SE winds and seas of 4 ft or less will continue over most of the Gulf through Thursday night. A surface trough moving west from Florida will cause winds over the Gulf to back to NE to E on Friday and Saturday. Wind speeds over the basin will generally be light during this time frame. ...CARIBBEAN SEA AND TROPICAL N ATLANTIC FROM 07N TO 19N BETWEEN 55W AND 64W... A slowly weakening ridge of high pressure is located north of the area. Latest satellite derived winds and sea heights along with ship, buoy, and CMAN data depict fresh to strong winds over the south central Caribbean and moderate to fresh winds over the north central Caribbean. Gentle to moderate winds are observed over the remainder of the Caribbean as well as the tropical north Atlantic forecast zones. Seas are in the 6-8 ft range over the south central Caribbean, 4-6 ft over the north central Caribbean, 3-5 ft over the eastern and western Caribbean, and 4-6 ft over the tropical north Atlantic forecast zones. The ridge to the north of the area will continue slowly weakening as a surface trough heads westward across the SW N Atlantic waters. This will reduce the pressure gradient over the Caribbean and allow the strong winds along the coasts of Colombia and Venezuela to become fresh by Thursday. ..SW N ATLANTIC INCLUDING THE BAHAMAS... The high pressure ridge to the north of the region along 32N is weakening slightly as a surface trough passes to the north of Puerto Rico. Latest satellite derived winds and sea heights along with ship, buoy, and CMAN data depict gentle to moderate winds over the forecast waters west of 70W and moderate to fresh winds east of 70W in the vicinity of the surface trough. Seas are in the 3-5 ft range west of 70W outside the Bahamas, 5-8 ft east of 70W, and 1-3 ft west of the Bahamas. The surface trough will move westward across the southern forecast waters and slowly weaken through Thursday. High pressure will rebuild in the wake of the trough. $$ .WARNINGS...Any changes impacting coastal NWS offices will be coordinated through AWIPS II Collaboration Chat, or by telephone: .GULF OF MEXICO...
