000 AGXX40 KNHC 300724 MIMATS Marine Weather Discussion NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL 324 AM EDT Fri Jun 30 2017 Marine Weather Discussion for the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, and Tropical North Atlantic from 07N to 19N between 55W and 64W and the Southwest North Atlantic including the Bahamas ...GULF OF MEXICO... A ridge dominates the Gulf waters. Under the influence of this system, the most recent scatterometer data and buoy observations indicate moderate to fresh southerly winds across the western Gulf, and mainly light to gentle E to SE winds across the eastern Gulf. Gentle to moderate easterly winds are noted across the Straits of Florida. Seas are generally under 5 ft across the entire area. In about 24 hours, a high pressure center will develop over the NE Gulf, then move toward SE Louisiana by late Sunday. Little change in the weather pattern and marine conditions are expected through the upcoming weekend as a ridge persists across the Gulf waters. A thermal trough will develop during the evening hours over the Yucatan Peninsula before pushing offshore into the SW Gulf each night. A surge of fresh to occasionally strong winds will accompany this trough. Seas will briefly build to 6-7 ft in association with these winds. ...CARIBBEAN SEA AND TROPICAL N ATLANTIC FROM 07N TO 19N BETWEEN 55W AND 64W... A vigorous tropical wave is moving across the eastern Caribbean. Its axis extends across the Mona Passage to the coast of Venezuela near 11N68W. An ASCAT pass showed very well the wind shift associated with this wave, forecast to move across the central Caribbean today and Saturday while slowing down. Fresh to locally strong winds and seas of 6-7 ft are related to this wave. Convection has diminished in association with the wave. Another tropical wave in the tropical Atlantic will reach 55W late today, enter the eastern Caribbean late Saturday, and move across the remainder of the Caribbean through early next week. The Atlantic ridge will build W into the Bahamas over the weekend to bring a return of fresh to strong trades across entire central Caribbean. Marine guidance indicates winds of 25-30 kt and building seas of 11-12 ft across the south-central Caribbean by early Sunday morning. Pulsing fresh to locally strong winds are also expected over the Gulf of Honduras, mainly between 00Z and 06Z. ..SW N ATLANTIC INCLUDING THE BAHAMAS... High pressure centered over the Azores extends a ridge SW across the SW N Atlantic, including the Bahamas. Light to gentle winds are noted per scatterometer data across the waters N of 27N with gentle to moderate winds between 22N and 27N. Moderate to fresh easterly winds dominate the south waters, including the approach to the Windward Passage. Seas are generally in the 3-5 ft range east of the Bahamas, and increase to 5-7 ft across the waters south of 22N.
