000 AGXX40 KNHC 221804 MIMATS Marine Weather Discussion NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL 204 PM EDT Thu Jun 22 2017 Marine Weather Discussion for the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, and Tropical North Atlantic from 07N to 19N between 55W and 64W and the Southwest North Atlantic including the Bahamas ...GULF OF MEXICO... Cindy made landfall earlier this morning near the Texas/Louisiana border and has weakened to a Tropical Depression as it has moved north and farther from the Gulf coast. The effects over the northern Gulf are lingering, with 20 to 30 kt S to SW winds and seas to 12 ft over the extreme northwest Gulf to the south of the circulation center, and over a N-S oriented convergent band along 87W-90W. These conditions will improve through tonight as the depression continues to weaken and move farther from the Gulf basin. Atlantic high pressure will expand westward in the wake of the departing system with a ridge axis setting up over the northern Gulf tonight through Saturday night, with generally moderate southeast to east winds south of the axis and gentle winds near the axis. Seas will range from 3 to 5 ft during this time period. The only exception will be associated with the northern portion of a tropical wave that is forecast to cross the southwestern Gulf Saturday and Sunday, helping to enhance shower and thunderstorm activity with occasionally strong gusty winds. On Sunday, a cold front will approach the northern Gulf and will then stall out near the northern Gulf coast, weakening the ridge axis somewhat and increasing chances for showers and thunderstorms over that portion of the basin. This boundary will likely remain over the area through Monday night. ...CARIBBEAN SEA AND TROPICAL N ATLANTIC FROM 07N TO 19N BETWEEN 55W AND 64W... Former Tropical Cyclone Bret, now a tropical wave along 77W-80W is interacting with an upper trough to support numerous showers and scattered thunderstorms over portions of the western Caribbean. This wave will begin to cross central America tonight and Friday, with showers and thunderstorms spreading over the northwest Caribbean. Strong east to southeast winds within a few hundred miles east of the wave are diminishing today as the wave gets farther from an Atlantic high pressure ridge axis. Tonight through Friday expect mainly moderate to fresh trade winds over the Caribbean and tropical north Atlantic forecast waters. The central Atlantic ridge will intensify slightly Friday night through Monday night which will help to tighten the pressure gradient over the south-central Caribbean supporting fresh to strong northeast to east winds and seas to 9 ft. A tropical wave over the tropical Atlantic forecast waters will cross the Leeward Islands tonight, and reach the central Caribbean by Sunday. A stronger tropical wave will reach 55W on Saturday and the Windward Islands by Sunday. This wave will be accompanied by showers and thunderstorms. ...SW N ATLANTIC INCLUDING THE BAHAMAS... High pressure will dominate the region over the next several days. The center of the high will meander over the northwest zones near 30N70W through Friday. A weak cold front will reach the U.S. Atlantic coast by Saturday and will weaken the center of the high, while stronger high pressure becomes established to the east over the central Atlantic. A ridge axis from the central Atlantic high center will remain over the northern waters Saturday through Monday. Another weak front will reach the western Atlantic north of our waters Monday night, helping to erode the ridge axis temporarily near the Florida peninsula. This general synoptic pattern the upcoming several days will support mainly moderate winds over the forecast zones, with localized fresh to strong winds along the coast of Hispaniola due to local effects. $$ .WARNINGS...Any changes impacting coastal NWS offices will be coordinated through AWIPS II Collaboration Chat, or by telephone: .GULF OF MEXICO...
