DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK
----------------------
At 500 AM HST (1500 UTC), the center of Hurricane Norman was located
near latitude 19.9 North, longitude 143.4 West. Norman is moving
toward the west near 17 mph (28 km/h). A westward motion with a
decrease in forward speed is expected to continue through tonight,
followed by a turn to the west-northwest on Wednesday, and to the
northwest on Wednesday night.
 
Maximum sustained winds are near 85 mph (140 km/h) with higher
gusts. Little change in strength is forecast during the next 48
hours, with Norman forecast to remain a hurricane through Wednesday
night.
 
Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 25 miles (35 km) from the
center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 115 miles
(185 km).
 
The estimated minimum central pressure is 982 mb (29.00 inches).
 
 
HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND

SURF: Large swell generated by Norman will produce rough surf
along east facing shores of the Hawaiian Islands beginning later
today and continuing through at least Thursday night.
