SUMMARY OF WATCHES AND WARNINGS IN EFFECT: A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for... * Kure Atoll and Midway Atoll and waters between Midway Atoll and Pearl and Hermes Atoll. * Portions of the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument from Lisianski Island to Pearl and Hermes Atoll. A Tropical Storm Watch means that tropical storm conditions are possible across the watch area within 48 hours. DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK ---------------------- At 800 PM HST (0600 UTC), the center of Hurricane Hector was located near latitude 21.6 North, longitude 172.3 West. Hector is moving toward the northwest near 14 mph (22 km/h) and this motion is expected to continue through Sunday, becoming slightly more westerly by Monday afternoon. Maximum sustained winds are near 110 mph (175 km/h) with higher gusts. Hector is a category 2 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind scale. Fairly rapid weakening is expected through Sunday, followed by more gradual weakening Monday. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 45 miles (75 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 140 miles (220 km). The estimated minimum central pressure is 960 mb (28.35 inches). HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND ---------------------- SURF: Hector is producing swell that will affect portions of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands tonight. This swell will continue for the next couple of days. The large southeast seas and swells will peak between Maro Reef and Lisianski Island tonight and Sunday, and across Pearl and Hermes, Midway Atoll and Kure Atoll late Sunday into Monday. WIND: Tropical Storm conditions are possible across Lisianski Island and Pearl and Hermes Atoll on Sunday. Tropical Storm conditions are possible across Kure Atoll and Midway Atoll on Monday.
