expected somewhere within the warning area today.
 
Interests on Johnston Island should monitor the progress of Hector.

Honolulu Hawaii.
 
 
DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK
----------------------
At 800 AM HST (1800 UTC), the eye of Hurricane Hector was located
by aircraft and radar near latitude 16.5 North, longitude 154.5
West. Hector is moving toward the west near 15 mph (24 km/h), and
this motion is expected to continue into Friday. On the forecast
track, the center of Hector will pass about 150 miles south of the
Big Island this afternoon, and about 300 miles south of Oahu
tonight. Remember, the effects of a hurricane are far reaching and
can extend well away from the center.

Maximum sustained winds are near 120 mph (195 km/h) with higher
gusts. Hector is a category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson
Hurricane Wind Scale. Some slight weakening is forecast during the
next couple of days.
 
Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 35 miles (55 km) from
the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 105
miles (165 km).
 
The estimated minimum central pressure is 960 mb (28.35 inches).
 
 
HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND
----------------------
SURF:  Swells generated by Hector will likely produce large and
dangerous surf along southeast and east facing shores of the Big
Island today. Large surf is also expected along east facing shores
of Maui.
 
WIND:  Tropical storm conditions are expected across portions of
the Big Island today as the core of Hector passes to the south. The
strongest winds are expected downslope from mountains, across
higher terrain, over headlands, and through gaps.
