DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK ---------------------- At 500 PM HST (0300 UTC), the center of Hurricane Walaka was located near latitude 30.2 North, longitude 168.0 West. Walaka is moving toward the northwest near 18 mph (30 km/h). A turn toward the north and a slowing of the forward speed is expected tonight, followed by an acceleration toward the northeast on Friday and Saturday. Maximum sustained winds are near 75 mph (120 km/h) with higher gusts. Steady weakening is forecast during the next 48 hours, and Walaka is expected to become a post-tropical low by Saturday. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 35 miles (55 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 260 miles (415 km). The estimated minimum central pressure is 983 mb (29.03 inches). HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND ---------------------- SURF: Swells generated by Walaka will continue to affect portions of the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument and the main Hawaiian Islands tonight.
