DISCUSSION AND 48-HOUR OUTLOOK

At 800 AM PDT (1500 UTC), the center of Hurricane Fernanda was
located near latitude 11.0 North, longitude 123.0 West.  Fernanda is
moving toward the west near 13 mph (20 km/h).  A turn toward the
west-northwest with a slight increase in forward speed is expected
later today, and that motion should continue through the weekend.

Maximum sustained winds are near 140 mph (220 km/h) with higher
gusts.  Fernanda is a category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson
Hurricane Wind Scale.  Some fluctuations in intensity are expected
during the next two days, but Fernanda is forecast to remain a
major hurricane into early next week.

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 30 miles (45 km) from the
center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 70 miles
(110 km).

The estimated minimum central pressure is 952 mb (28.12 inches).
