DISCUSSION AND 48-HOUR OUTLOOK

At 200 PM PDT (2100 UTC), the center of Hurricane Orlene was located
near latitude 20.2 North, longitude 119.7 West. Orlene is moving
toward the west near 5 mph (7 km/h). A westward to
west-southwestward motion with an increase in forward speed is
expected during the next couple of days.

Maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 75 mph (120 km/h)
with higher gusts.  Continued gradual weakening is forecast during
the next 48 hours, and Orlene is expected to become a tropical storm
tonight or early Thursday.

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 25 miles (35 km) from the
center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 90 miles
(150 km).

The estimated minimum central pressure is 988 mb (29.18 inches).
