DISCUSSION AND 48-HOUR OUTLOOK

At 200 AM PDT (0900 UTC), the center of Hurricane Orlene was located
near latitude 20.2 North, longitude 118.8 West. Orlene is moving
toward the west near 1 mph (2 km/h).  The hurricane is expected to
move westward or west-southwestward at a faster forward speed later
today.  A westward or west-southwestward motion should continue
through Thursday night.

Maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 80 mph (130 km/h)
with higher gusts.  Gradual weakening is forecast during the next
48 hours, and Orlene is expected to become a tropical storm by late
today or early Thursday.

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 25 miles (35 km) from the
center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 90 miles
(150 km).

The estimated minimum central pressure is 984 mb (29.06 inches).
