NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL
0405 UTC Thu Apr 18 2024

Tropical Weather Discussion for the eastern Pacific Ocean from
03.4S to 30N, east of 120W including the Gulf of California, and
from the Equator to 30N, between 120W and 140W. The following
information is based on satellite imagery, weather observations,
radar, and meteorological analysis.

Based on 0000 UTC surface analysis and satellite imagery through
0300 UTC.

...INTERTROPICAL CONVERGENCE ZONE/MONSOON TROUGH...

A trough extends from Panama near 08N78W to 06N95W. The ITCZ
continues from 06N95W to 06N115W to 04N125W to 07N140W.
Scattered moderate convection is noted from 05N to 09N between
112W and 119W, and from 03N to 05N between 123W and 127W, and
from 09N to 11N between 135W and 137W.

...OFFSHORE WATERS WITHIN 250 NM OF MEXICO...

Moderate NW winds persist along the coast and offshore waters of
Baja California, between weak high pressure west of the area and
lower pressure over central Mexico. NW swell moving through the
regional waters is producing seas of 5 to 7 ft to the
Revillagigedo Islands while subsiding. Gentle to moderate winds
and seas persist elsewhere.

For the forecast, gentle to moderate winds winds and moderate
seas will persist through Sat. Looking ahead, fresh NW winds and
building swell will follow a weak cold front into the waters near
Guadalupe Island off Baja California Norte early next week.

...OFFSHORE WATERS WITHIN 250 NM OF CENTRAL AMERICA, COLOMBIA,
AND WITHIN 750 NM OF ECUADOR

Moderate N gap winds persist in the Gulf of Panama, with seas of
4 to 6 ft. Gap winds have diminished in the Gulf of Papagayo.
Light to gentle winds and moderate seas of 3 to 5 ft in SW swell
are noted elsewhere.

For the forecast, moderate gap winds will pulse tonight in the
Gulf of Papagayo. Gentle breezes will persist elsewhere into
early next week, with mostly 4 to 6 ft combined seas primarily in
SW swell.

...REMAINDER OF THE AREA...

Scattered showers and thunderstorms are active near a surface
trough along 115W near the ITCZ, and near a 1009 mb low pressure
near 06N138W. Broad ridging persists north of 20N, supporting
moderate to fresh trade winds across the tropical Pacific west of
120W. Combined seas are 8 to 10 ft in this area, in a mix of NW
swell, S swell, and shorter-period easterly waves resulting from
the trade wind flow. Gentle to moderate breezes and moderate
seas are evident elsewhere.

For the forecast, wave heights will subside across the region
through Fri, although an area of 8 ft seas will persist from 08N
to 12N west of 130W due to fresh trade winds and lingering
swell into early next week.
