000 ABNT30 KNHC 011244 TWSAT Monthly Tropical Weather Summary NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL 700 AM EST Fri Dec 1 2017 For the North Atlantic...Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico: One named storm, Rina, formed in the North Atlantic basin in November. Based on a 30-year climatology (1981-2010), a named storm forms in the basin in roughly 7 out of 10 years in November, with a hurricane forming about once every other year. Overall activity in the Atlantic basin in 2017 was well above average, with 17 named storms, 10 hurricanes, and 6 major hurricanes. This compares to the long-term averages of 12 named storms, 6 hurricanes, and 3 major hurricanes. One unnamed tropical depression also formed in 2017. In terms of Accumulated Cyclone Energy (ACE), which measures the combined strength and duration of tropical storms and hurricanes, preliminary data indicate that the 2017 season was the most active since 2005 and the 7th most active on record in the basin, behind 1933, 2005, 1893, 1926, 1995, and 2004.
