Based on a 30-year (1981-2010) climatology, one named storm typically forms in the Atlantic basin in July, with a hurricane forming about once every other year. In terms of the Accumulated Cyclone Energy (ACE), which measures the combined strength and duration of tropical storms and hurricanes, activity in the Atlantic basin so far in 2016 is above normal.
