DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK ---------------------- At 500 AM HST (1500 UTC), the center of Major Hurricane Darby was located near latitude 14.6 North, longitude 123.4 West. Darby is moving toward the west near 15 mph (24 km/h) and this motion is expected to continue today with a gradual turn to the west-northwest beginning by Tuesday. Darby has been rapidly intensifying this morning and maximum sustained winds are now near 125 mph (205 km/h) with higher gusts. Darby is a category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Additional strengthening is forecast today, and Darby is forecast to become a category 4 hurricane. Weakening is then forecast to begin by midweek. Darby remains a small hurricane, with hurricane-force winds only extending outward 10 miles (20 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extending outward up to 60 miles (95 km).
