DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK ---------------------- At 200 AM PDT (0900 UTC), the center of Tropical Storm John was located near latitude 25.9 North, longitude 119.9 West. John is moving toward the northwest near 10 mph (17 km/h), and this motion is expected to continue over the next couple of days with a gradual decrease in forward speed. A turn to the north is expected late this weekend. Maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 45 mph (75 km/h) with higher gusts. Additional weakening is forecast, and John will likely become a depression later today and become a remnant low this weekend. Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 115 miles (185 km) from the center. The estimated minimum central pressure is 1001 mb (29.56 inches). HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND ---------------------- SURF: Swells generated by John are affecting portions of the coasts of southwestern Mexico and the Baja California peninsula. The swells are beginning to reach the coast of southern California and are expected to continue through Saturday. These swells could cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.
