DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK ---------------------- At 200 AM PDT (0900 UTC), the center of Tropical Storm John was located near latitude 23.7 North, longitude 115.9 West. John is moving toward the northwest near 16 mph (26 km/h), and a turn toward the west-northwest with a decrease in forward speed is expected over the next few days. Maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 70 mph (110 km/h) with higher gusts. Some weakening is forecast, and John is expected to degenerate into a remnant low on Saturday. Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 140 miles (220 km) from the center. The estimated minimum central pressure is 990 mb (29.24 inches). HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND ---------------------- SURF: Swells generated by John are affecting portions of the coasts of southwestern Mexico and the southern portion of the Baja California peninsula, and will spread northward along the west coast of the Baja California peninsula during the next couple of days. The swells are forecast to reach the coast of southern California by late today. These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.
