Interests in the southern portion of the Baja California peninsula should monitor the progress of John. DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK ---------------------- At 900 PM MDT (0300 UTC), the ragged eye of Hurricane John was located near latitude 16.7 North, longitude 108.6 West. John is moving toward the northwest near 8 mph (13 km/h), and a faster northwestward motion is forecast for the next few days. Maximum sustained winds remain near 75 mph (120 km/h) with higher gusts. Some strengthening is forecast and John is expected to become a major hurricane by late Tuesday or early Wednesday. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 25 miles (35 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 105 miles (165 km). The estimated minimum central pressure is 989 mb (29.21 inches). HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND ---------------------- SURF: Swells generated by John are expected to begin affecting the coasts of southwestern Mexico and the southern portion of the Baja California peninsula during the next day or so. These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions. Please consult products from your local weather office.
