000 AGXX40 KNHC 241902 MIMATS Marine Weather Discussion NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL 202 PM EST Fri Nov 24 2017 Marine Weather Discussion for the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, and Tropical North Atlantic from 07N to 19N between 55W and 64W and the Southwest North Atlantic including the Bahamas ...GULF OF MEXICO... A cold front curves SW from the Florida Keys to the western tip of Cuba to the Yucatan Peninsula. Latest surface observations and satellite-derived winds indicate moderate to fresh winds over almost the entire basin except for right along the coasts of Mexico and Texas N of 22N and W of 96W. A sliver of light to moderate SW to W winds is noted over the extreme SE Gulf ahead of the cold front. Seas are in the 6-8 ft range over the SW Gulf, and in the 3-5 ft range elsewhere. The cold front will exit SE of the Gulf this afternoon. High pressure will then build across the Gulf waters in the wake of the front. A weak cold front will wash out over the northern waters Sunday, but will not progress very far into the area before dissipating by Monday. Ridging extending SW over the Gulf will gradually shift east on Tue and Wed, setting up SE to S return flow over the western third of the gulf. Another weak cold front is expected to dissipate over the NW Gulf on Wednesday night. ...CARIBBEAN SEA AND TROPICAL N ATLANTIC FROM 07N TO 19N BETWEEN 55W AND 64W... A surface trough lingers over the W Caribbean between central Cuba and Panama. A mid to upper-level trough over the Gulf of Mexico is creating upper-level divergence over the trough, which is generating showers and thunderstorms in the vicinity of the trough from 09N to 20N between 76W and 82W. Latest surface observations and satellite-derived winds indicate moderate to fresh N to NW winds W of the trough, except in the lee of Cuba where light to gentle winds prevail. Moderate winds are noted over the waters E of the trough, as well as the tropical N Atlc forecast waters. Seas in the 3-5 ft range cover much of the Caribbean, except for the lee of Cuba where 1-3 ft seas prevail. North winds west of the trough will become strong along the immediate coast of Nicaragua tonight. Over the tropical N Atlc forecast zones, seas are in the 5-6 ft range. A cold front will move into the NW Caribbean this afternoon, then slowly dissipate during the next couple of days. High pressure ridging into the western Caribbean behind the front will cause winds along the coast of Nicaragua to become strong on Monday and Monday night. Seas in this area are expected to peak around 8 ft on Mon night. ...SW N ATLANTIC INCLUDING THE BAHAMAS... Low pressure is moving NE from Cape Canaveral on the Florida coast into the NW waters. A very tight pressure gradient exists on the north side of the stationary front that extends NE from the low to beyond 31N77W. Strong to gale-force winds were occurring N of the front. Considered issuing a gale warning for the waters west of the front and N of 30N but ship observations from this area only indicated strong winds. Latest surface observations and satellite-derived winds indicate fresh to strong winds south of the front over the NW waters. Light to gentle winds are observed from the central Bahamas southeastward. Seas are in the 6-8 ft range over the NW waters, 4-6 ft elsewhere outside the Bahamas, and 1-2 ft W of the Bahamas. The area of low pressure will shift N of the area tonight. The associated cold front will slowly move SE and stall over the central Bahamas Sun and Sun night. High pressure will build over the area in the wake of the front and maintain moderate to fresh winds over the forecast waters on Mon and Tue. $$ .WARNINGS...Any changes impacting coastal NWS offices will be coordinated through AWIPS II Collaboration Chat, or by telephone: .GULF OF MEXICO...
