Latest scatterometer data show gentle to moderate ESE winds across the basin with locally fresh NE to E winds in the Straits of Florida due to the pressure gradient between a surface trough moving across Cuba and high pressure to the north. Moderate NNE winds are within 30 nm of the W Yucatan Peninsula enhanced by a surface trough inland. Seas are 2 to 3 ft basin-wide. Otherwise, a weak ridge dominates the Gulf waters. Winds in the Florida Straits are forecast to increase to fresh as the surface trough across Cuba continue to move W later this morning. Fresh winds will continue to propagate W across the SE Gulf through tonight with seas building up to 5 ft. A cold front is forecast to move off the coast of Texas this afternoon and then reach from near New Orleans SW to near Veracruz, Mexico Wednesday morning. The portion of the front across the Gulf will then stall Wednesday afternoon and then gradually dissipate through Thursday night. Strong high pressure will develop along the eastern slopes of the Sierra Madre Mountains in Mexico leading to the development of fresh to strong northerly wind within 60 nm off the coast of E Mexico early Wednesday morning through late night that day when these winds will reduce to the W Bay of Campeche. ...CARIBBEAN SEA AND TROPICAL N ATLANTIC FROM 07N TO 19N BETWEEN 55W AND 64W... Moderate to fresh winds prevail off the coast of Belize and in the Gulf of Honduras expected to prevail through later this morning. Moderate NE winds are observed in the Windward passage supported by the gradient between a surface trough that moves W across Cuba and high pressure over SW N Atlc waters. Light and gentle winds are noted elsewhere with seas of 2-3 ft. A tropical wave is moving across the eastern Caribbean this morning and will support the development of SE moderate winds in the SE Caribbean later this morning through tonight. The wave will move over central Caribbean waters Wednesday and over the W basin Thursday. Winds and seas will slightly increase behind the wave axis as the wave moves across the basin. Model guidance indicate moderate trades and seas up to 5 ft in the wake of the wave. Otherwise, fresh to strong winds will develop off the coast of Colombia with seas building to 8 ft over the weekend. ...SW N ATLANTIC INCLUDING THE BAHAMAS... Surface ridging dominates most of the forecast waters while a low amplitude trough continue to move over Cuba. An area of fresh easterly winds, with seas to 6 ft E of the Bahamas, is noted in the wake of the trough, forecast to move across south Florida and the Straits of Florida through early Wednesday morning when winds diminish to moderate. The northern energy of a tropical wave moving across the E Caribbean is analyzed as a surface trough, which will be affecting forecast zone AMZ127 with fresh to near gale-force winds and seas to 12 ft through later this morning.
