000 AGXX40 KNHC 010713 MIMATS Marine Weather Discussion NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL 313 AM EDT Sat Jul 1 2017 Marine Weather Discussion for the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, and Tropical North Atlantic from 07N to 19N between 55W and 64W and the Southwest North Atlantic including the Bahamas ...GULF OF MEXICO... A ridge extending from the Atlantic across the Gulf will dominate the area. A weak high pressure of 1018 mb located over the NE Gulf is within the ridge. This system is maintaining mainly moderate to fresh southerly winds across the western Gulf, and light to gentle E to SE winds across the eastern Gulf, with light and variable winds over the Ne Gulf due to the presence of the high pressure center. Seas are in the 1-3 ft range over the eastern half of the Gulf, and in the 4-6 ft range over the western half of the Gulf. The high prssure will move toward SE Louisiana by late Sunday. Little change in the weather pattern and marine conditions are expected through early next week as a ridge persists across the Gulf waters. A tropical wave is forecast to reach the Yucatan Peninsula late Sunday. A thermal trough will develop during the evening hours over the Yucatan Peninsula before pushing offshore into the SW Gulf each night. A surge of fresh to occasionally strong winds will accompany this trough. A recent ASCAT pass confirmed the presence of these winds covering the Gulf waters from 20N-23N between 89W-92W. Seas will briefly build to 6-7 ft in association with these winds. ...CARIBBEAN SEA AND TROPICAL N ATLANTIC FROM 07N TO 19N BETWEEN 55W AND 64W... The most recent scatterometer data show fresh to strong winds across the central Caribbean in the wake of a tropical wave located near 80W. Winds are expected to further increase to 25-30 kt, with frequent gusts to gale force, across the south- central Caribbean this morning through Sunday morning. As a result, a gale warning will be issued with this forecast package. By tonight, expect a large area of fresh to strong winds covering roughly the waters from 11N-18N W of 68W, including also the Gulf of Honduras. Seas are forecast to build to 12-13 ft with the strongest winds tonight into Sunday morning. Moderate to fresh NE winds are also noted per scatterometer data across the Windward Passage. These winds will diminish during the day today, and will pulse again to 20 kt tonight. A second tropical is entering the Tropical N Atlantic generating some shower activity. This wave will reach the Windward Islands by this evening, and moves across the eastern Caribbean on Sunday. Moderate to fresh winds, with possible higher gusts, and seas of 6-7 ft will accompany the passage of this wave, forecast to be near 70W by late Monday. The wave will continue through the central Caribbean early next week, allowing trade winds to diminish slightly for a brief period of time late Monday, before increasing again Monday night through Wednesday. The strongest winds as usual will be off the coast of Colombia, mainly at night, as well as pulsing winds off Cabo Beata on the southern coast of the Dominican Republic. ..SW N ATLANTIC INCLUDING THE BAHAMAS... High pressure centered over the Azores extends a ridge SW across the SW N Atlantic, including the Bahamas. Light to gentle winds are noted per scatterometer data across the waters N of 27N with gentle to moderate winds between 22N and 27N. Moderate to locally fresh easterly winds dominate the south waters, including the approach to the Windward Passage. Seas are generally in the 3-5 ft range east of the Bahamas, and increase to 5-6 ft across the waters south of 22N.
