000 AGXX40 KNHC 051745 MIMATS Marine Weather Discussion NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL 145 PM EDT Fri May 5 2017 Marine Weather Discussion for the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, and Tropical North Atlantic from 07N to 19N between 55W and 64W and the Southwest North Atlantic including the Bahamas ...GULF OF MEXICO... A late season cold front has exited the southeastern Gulf this afternoon. Strong west to northwest winds with gusts to gale force will continue over the northeastern Gulf mainly north of 29N until 06Z tonight, with fresh to strong winds over these waters lingering through Saturday morning. Fresh to strong northwest to north winds over the southeastern gulf will diminish to 10 to 15 kt overnight tonight. High pressure will become centered over the western Gulf Saturday morning and then will slide eastward over the Gulf basin over the weekend. The center of the high will settle over the northeastern Gulf early next week, then become absorbed into a broad ridge that will extend from the SW N Atlantic the middle of next week. Fair conditions are expected to prevail over the basin under the control of high pressure. As the high becomes centered over the northeastern Gulf, expect fresh to locally strong winds to develop as the Yucatan thermal trough moves westward each night over the eastern bay of Campeche. ...CARIBBEAN SEA AND TROPICAL N ATLANTIC FROM 07N TO 19N BETWEEN 55W AND 64W... A cold front is entering the northwestern Caribbean this afternoon with scattered thunderstorms just ahead of the front. This late season cold front will continue to move southeastward, stalling out from eastern Cuba to east of Belize on Saturday, and dissipating there through Sunday. Moderate to fresh northerly winds will occur north of the front through Saturday morning. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will continue to persist along and ahead of the boundary until it dissipates Sunday. Elsewhere, a weak pressure pattern over the western Caribbean is resulting in gentle winds. High pressure over the central Atlantic and low pressure near the coast of Colombia will support moderate to locally fresh trade winds over the central and eastern Caribbean and tropical Atlantic forecast waters through the forecast period. Fresh to strong winds are expected tonight near the northeastern Colombia coast. Northerly swell of 6 to 7 ft will pass across the tropical Atlantic zones through this weekend. ...SW N ATLANTIC INCLUDING THE BAHAMAS... A cold front that currently extends from 31N79W to 28N81W will continue to move southeast and extend from 31N73W to central Cuba Saturday morning, then from 31N67W to 25N72W and stationary to eastern Cuba by Sunday morning. The front will dissipate over this area through Monday morning. Strong southwest to west winds will occur north of 27N behind this front the next two days. Frequent gusts to gale force are expected this afternoon through early Saturday afternoon north of 29N and west of the front where the strongest cold advection is occurring. Numerous thunderstorms will continue within 90 nm east of the front through the weekend. Strong southerly flow is expected mainly north of 28N, within about 400 nm east of the front through Saturday night. The weakening frontal system will allow for winds to decrease below 25 kt on Sunday with seas diminishing below 8 ft Sunday night. Latest model runs are indicating that another cold front may clip the northern waters Sunday and Monday. This front is not expected to be as strong as the current front. High pressure will then become centered over the SW N Atlantic from early to the middle of next week. Over the southeastern zones, mainly moderate east to southeast winds with seas 5 to 7 ft will prevail the next several days. $$ .WARNINGS...Any changes impacting coastal NWS offices will be coordinated through AWIPS II Collaboration Chat, or by telephone: .GULF OF MEXICO... .GMZ015...NE GULF N OF 25N E OF 87W...
