DISCUSSION AND 48-HOUR OUTLOOK

At 800 AM PDT (1500 UTC), the center of Hurricane Orlene was located
near latitude 20.1 North, longitude 119.1 West.  Orlene is moving
toward the west near 2 mph (4 km/h).  A westward to
west-southwestward motion with an increase in forward speed is
expected during the next couple of days.

Maximum sustained winds are near 80 mph (130 km/h) with higher
gusts.  Gradual weakening is forecast during the next 48 hours, and
Orlene is expected to become a tropical storm by tonight or early
Thursday.

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 25 miles (35 km) from the
center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 90 miles
(150 km).

The estimated minimum central pressure is 984 mb (29.06 inches).
