DISCUSSION AND 48-HOUR OUTLOOK

At 800 PM PDT (0300 UTC), the center of Hurricane Orlene was located
near latitude 20.4 North, longitude 118.6 West. Orlene is moving
toward the north near 1 mph (2 km/h). The hurricane is expected to
become nearly stationary tonight, followed by a slow westward motion
on Wednesday.

Maximum sustained winds are near 85 mph (140 km/h) with higher
gusts. Gradual weakening is forecast during the next 48 hours, and
Orlene is expected to become a tropical storm by late Wednesday or
early Thursday.

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 25 miles (35 km) from the
center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 90 miles
(150 km).

The estimated minimum central pressure is 980 mb (28.94 inches).
