CHANGES WITH THIS ADVISORY:

The government of Mexico has discontinued all coastal watches and
warnings.

SUMMARY OF WATCHES AND WARNINGS IN EFFECT:

There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect.

High wind watches and wind advisories are in effect for portions of
the southwestern United States.  For storm information specific to
your area in the United States, please monitor products issued by
your local National Weather Service forecast office.  For
information in Mexico, please monitor products issued by the
Meteorological Service of Mexico.


DISCUSSION AND 48-HOUR OUTLOOK
------------------------------
At 600 AM MDT (1200 UTC), the center of Tropical Storm Newton was
located inland over the Mexican state of Sonora near latitude 29.6
North, longitude 111.6 West.  Newton is moving toward the north near
18 mph (30 km/h), and a turn toward the northeast is expected over
the next day or so.  On the forecast track, the center will move
over extreme northwestern Mexico this morning and into southeastern
Arizona this afternoon.

Maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 60 mph (90 km/h)
with higher gusts.  Rapid weakening will continue today as the
center moves farther inland, and Newton should weaken to a tropical
depression later today and dissipate by early Thursday.

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 150 miles (240 km)
mainly to the south and east of the center.  An automated station
well inland east of Bahia Kino reported a sustained wind of 45 mph
(72 km/h) with a gust to 64 mph (103 km/h) a couple of hours ago.
Hermosillo International Airport has reported a wind gust as high as
50 mph (85 km/h).

The estimated minimum central pressure is 991 mb (29.26 inches).


HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND
----------------------
WIND:  Tropical storm conditions will continue over portions of the
Mexican state of Sonora this morning, but winds should subside by
this afternoon.

Tropical storm conditions could spread into portions of southeastern
Arizona later today.

RAINFALL:  Rains associated with Newton are moving away from the
Baja California peninsula.  Newton is expected to produce total rain
accumulations of 3 to 6 inches, and possible isolated maximum
amounts of 10 inches, over the Mexican state of Sonora.   Moisture
associated with Newton is expected to produce total rain
accumulations of 1 to 3 inches with locally higher amounts over
southeastern Arizona and southern New Mexico through Thursday.
This heavy rainfall may cause life-threatening flash floods and mud
slides in areas of mountainous terrain.

STORM SURGE:  Storm surge could continue in areas of onshore winds
during the next few hours, but water levels are expected to
diminish during the day.

SURF:  Swells associated with Newton over the Gulf of California
will begin to subside.
