FOR THE EASTERN NORTH PACIFIC...EAST OF 140 DEGREES WEST LONGITUDE..

OCTOBER WAS AN ACTIVE MONTH FEATURING THE FORMATION OF TWO
HURRICANES...IRWIN AND JOVA...WITH JOVA REACHING MAJOR HURRICANE
STRENGTH.  THESE VALUES ARE NEAR OR ABOVE THE LONG-TERM AVERAGES OF
ABOUT TWO TROPICAL STORMS...ONE HURRICANE...AND A MAJOR HURRICANE
EVERY OTHER YEAR.  ALSO...ONE TROPICAL DEPRESSION...TWELVE-E...
FORMED AND QUICKLY MOVED INLAND OVER SOUTHERN MEXICO.  IN TERMS OF
ACCUMULATED CYCLONE ENERGY...ACE...WHICH MEASURES THE COMBINED
STRENGTH AND DURATION OF TROPICAL STORMS AND HURRICANES...TROPICAL
CYCLONE ACTIVITY IN OCTOBER WAS ABOUT FIFTY PERCENT ABOVE THE
LONG-TERM MEAN.
