ISLAND.

ENVIRONMENT CANADA HAS EXTENDED THE TROPICAL STORM WARNING ALONG THE
COAST OF NEWFOUNDLAND WEST OF STONES COVE TO BURGEO...AND FROM
CHARLOTTETOWN NORTHWARD AND WESTWARD TO TRITON.

A HURRICANE WATCH IS IN EFFECT FOR...
* THE COAST OF NEWFOUNDLAND FROM STONES COVE NORTHWARD AND EASTWARD
TO FOGO ISLAND
 
A TROPICAL STORM WARNING IS IN EFFECT FOR...
* THE COAST OF NEWFOUNDLAND FROM BURGEO NORTHWARD AND EASTWARD
TO TRITON
* THE ISLANDS OF ST-PIERRE AND MIQUELON

A HURRICANE WATCH MEANS THAT HURRICANE CONDITIONS ARE POSSIBLE
WITHIN THE WATCH AREA.  A WATCH IS TYPICALLY ISSUED 48 HOURS
BEFORE THE ANTICIPATED FIRST OCCURRENCE OF TROPICAL-STORM-FORCE
WINDS...CONDITIONS THAT MAKE OUTSIDE PREPARATIONS DIFFICULT OR
DANGEROUS.
 
A TROPICAL STORM WARNING MEANS THAT TROPICAL STORM CONDITIONS ARE

AT 200 AM AST...0600 UTC...THE CENTER OF HURRICANE IGOR WAS LOCATED
NEAR LATITUDE 41.3 NORTH...LONGITUDE 57.5 WEST. IGOR IS MOVING
TOWARD THE NORTHEAST NEAR 30 MPH...48 KM/HR...AND A TURN TO THE
NORTH-NORTHEAST IS EXPECTED LATER TODAY FOLLOWED BY A TURN TOWARD
THE NORTH ON WEDNESDAY.  ON THE FORECAST TRACK...THE CENTER OF THE
CYCLONE WILL MOVE NEAR THE SOUTHEASTERN TIP OF NEWFOUNDLAND LATER
TODAY.
 
MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS ARE NEAR 75 MPH...120 KM/HR...WITH HIGHER
GUSTS.  IGOR IS A CATEGORY ONE HURRICANE ON THE SAFFIR-SIMPSON
HURRICANE WIND SCALE.  SOME STRENGTHENING IS FORECAST...AND IGOR IS
LIKELY TO BECOME AN INTENSE EXTRATROPICAL CYCLONE LATER TODAY.
 
HURRICANE FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUTWARD UP TO 85 MILES...140 KM...FROM
THE CENTER...AND TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUTWARD UP TO 380
MILES...610 KM.
 
ESTIMATED MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE IS 968 MB...28.59 INCHES.
 
 
HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND

WIND...WINDS OF TROPICAL STORM OR GALE FORCE ARE EXPECTED WITHIN THE
TROPICAL STORM WARNING AREA TODAY.  WINDS OF HURRICANE FORCE ARE
POSSIBLE IN THE HURRICANE WATCH AREA.
 
RAINFALL...IGOR IS EXPECTED TO PRODUCE TOTAL RAIN ACCUMULATIONS OF 4
TO 8 INCHES PRIMARILY OVER THE EASTERN HALF OF NEWFOUNDLAND...WITH
ISOLATED AMOUNTS OF 10 INCHES POSSIBLE.
 
SURF...LARGE SWELLS WILL CONTINUE TO AFFECT THE EAST COAST OF THE
UNITED STATES THROUGH TODAY AND THE SOUTH-FACING COASTLINES OF
NOVA SCOTIA AND NEWFOUNDLAND FOR THE NEXT FEW DAYS.  SWELLS WILL BE
SLOW TO SUBSIDE IN PUERTO RICO...THE VIRGIN ISLANDS...HISPANIOLA...
AND PORTIONS OF THE BAHAMAS DURING THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS.  THESE
SWELLS ARE LIKELY TO CAUSE LIFE-THREATENING SURF AND RIP CURRENTS.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.
